Born in 1964 - Senegal
Ibrahima Soumare is a painter, illustrator and designer born in November 1964 in Kaolack, Senegal. At the age of 9, he discovers the French painter Degas, and through him an incredible universe; he starts dreaming of becoming an artist. He debuts his career as an illustrator and graphic designer for advertising agencies, and finally becomes a member of the A.I.A.P. (International Association of Plastic Arts) of the UNESCO in 2000. In 2002 he is awarded the Prize of the Salon de Versailles.
Fascinated by people and daily life, Ibrahima Soumare takes pictures in the streets of Paris and London trying to capture genuine moments in life. The images he collects allow him to build on canvas scenes of ordinary life in which the viewers feel like they rediscover reality. Soumare's personal style makes this dialog with reality easier. His atmospheric night scenes display the city lighting and show urban space under the neon lights. The lights twinkle, are reflected by the car bodies, and give a more cosy feeling of the urban space.
He also produced a series of Bouches (Mouths) that compose a gallery of portraits. By choosing to focus on a specific part of the face, Ibrahima Soumare seeks to capture the element that gives it its expressiveness. The soul of his subjects is thus materialized through the mouth and its various expressions.
