From art installation to luxury design piece

Genesis of an atypical project

Artist and farmer working in Béarn (64), during the first confinement of 2020, Marie Labat felt very strongly the general awareness for a return to basics. This has translated for many of us into the need to get closer to the earth and to practice the right gestures; a return of the hand to vegetable work for example. Gestures, which she observed daily on her farm, which seemed to her to have been ignored until then by the population, have again become essential gestures in the eyes of all; a common impulse towards a new world.

His plastic research opened with an installation project whose essence is the awareness of our flaws, the necessary preservation of our earth, and the omnipresence of digital technology. Throughout the development of this project, the power of the gestures represented aroused in the visual artist the desire to enhance them in a full-fledged production. She then established an inventory of gestures divided into several series:

The beginnings of the garden (current collection of scarves)
harvest in the garden
The orchard
animal care
The installation of fences
The henhouse…
At the same time, her wish to work on the scarf came back to her mind and it seemed obvious to her to work on these gestures on this surface, which is both a work accessory and a fashion accessory.
Thus was born the “Des gestes” line and the first collection devoted to the beginnings of the garden.

When a fashion accessory becomes a banner.

Carrying our connection to the earth, rediscovered gestures.

The scarf was an accessory of work clothes. I remember my grandmother wearing a cloth to carry out agricultural work. He shielded her from the sun and covered her hair from dust. This attribute has become a fashion accessory, a precious object, available in various colors and patterns, a must in wardrobes. The silk square is a potentially interesting surface to invest in to convey messages. Visual artist, I seize it to make it the banner of a return to gestures in touch with our land.

Worn in the countryside as in the city, around the neck, in the hair, on the shoulder, my silk scarves dress the body of the image with a gesture, they make the message public. Associated with the scarf and my approach as an artist, the body then becomes an artistic object. To carry gestures like a work of art to show their preciousness, their necessity, to show them and to revive them as a form of commitment. Thus, on a silk square, the gestures live outside the gallery, the exhibition space. They are in our daily lives, dress our landscape with our new considerations. The know-how of our hands, its lost fundamental gestures are now found.

Rare scarves as an art edition.

5 gestures, 5 models of scarves drawn in 12 copies each and numbered.

Like a haute couture accessory, each model is produced in a very small series of 12 pieces. This makes these scarves exceptional pieces of great rarity, which only 12 people per design will wear on this earth. These 5 numbered and signed editions are comparable to limited prints of engravings. This rarity contributes to their preciousness, contributes to their value and gives them the status of a work of art. The fact that they are created by a visual artist is no stranger to this.

Acquiring one of these scarves is wearing an original creation that makes sense; it takes precious gestures with you to continually remind us of what is essential; finally, it is to carry a universal and timeless language: art!

Marie Labat

France  • 1983

Marie Labat is a French visual artist born in 1983. She lives and works in Lys in the Atlantic Pyrenees.

Being a rural artist according to her, Marie Labat gives a main place to craftmanship as well as to the Relationship between man and nature. The work of the earth is at the origin of a whole civilization, of his culture and his evolution. To study the way in which people exploits nature and to derive their subsistance allows us to learn a lot about the actual state of a society, its values and its objectives.
Marie Labat is interested mainly in landscapes, which means in a wild space modified by man with a logic of appropiation. From this geographic delimitation, the artist studies the myths, the codes and the legends of the area, doing a visual work that allows him to create new landscapes, from his own apprehension of the existing one.

Marie Labat exhibits her work regularly in France.
