Presentation

Jeff Koons, the most expensive living artist, is known for his provocative and monumental sculptures that redefine contemporary art. Born in 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, Koons studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art before briefly working as a stockbroker on Wall Street. This financial background shaped his strategic approach to the art market, transforming his creations into some of the most lucrative investments of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Deeply influenced by 1980s American Pop Art, Koons elevates everyday objects to the realm of fine art, redefining the "ready-made" concept. By transforming vacuum cleaners, basketballs, and kitsch pop culture icons into high-value artworks, he merges luxury, nostalgia, and mass appeal. His sculptures, such as the stainless-steel Popeye and the porcelain Michael Jackson and Bubbles, showcase his fascination with commercial aesthetics and mass production.

Koons gained widespread media attention in 1991 after marrying Italian pornographic actress Ilona Staller, known as Cicciolina. Their collaboration on Made in Heaven, an explicit series featuring the couple, caused a scandal and reinforced Koons’s status as a cultural provocateur. His large-scale exhibitions, such as the controversial showcase at the Palace of Versailles in 2008 and a major retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2014, have further cemented his reputation. In 2019, his Rabbit sculpture sold at Christie's for $91 million, setting a record for the most expensive artwork by a living artist.

In recent years, Koons has continued to push artistic boundaries with major exhibitions. Shine at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (2021-2022) explored the tension between illusion and reality, featuring iconic works like Rabbit (1986). Apollo at the DESTE Foundation’s Project Space in Hydra, Greece (2022) created a dialogue between contemporary and ancient art through new sculptures and readymade objects. More recently, Reflections: Picasso/Koons at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Granada in Alhambra, Spain (2024-2025) juxtaposed Koons's work with that of Pablo Picasso, highlighting artistic connections across time.

Always at the forefront of innovation, Koons launched an unprecedented project in 2024 by sending 125 stainless steel miniature moon sculptures aboard a SpaceX rocket to the Moon, merging art with space exploration. Despite embracing technological advancements, Koons remains skeptical of artificial intelligence in art, emphasizing that AI should serve as a tool rather than replace human creativity.

Working from his Chelsea, New York studio, where a team of artisans produces his meticulously crafted pieces, Koons continues to dominate the contemporary art scene. His ability to merge high art with consumer culture, combined with his mastery of large-scale sculpture, ensures his place as one of the most influential artists of the 21st century.
