Presentation

Artist Statement:

My work explores geometric form as it applies to architecture, landscape and the human figure. I translate a memory of a place or an experience through the process of abstraction. By observation, contemplation, and repeated layering of paint, the canvas begins to reveal its particular shapes, lines and textures. The paintings are an exploration of color and geometric form as well as an attempt to suggest a feeling or nuance that is not cut off from the psyche and alludes to hidden affinities and elusive qualities.

My work has been in exhibitions nationally and internationally. I am a native of the Pacific Northwest, and draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings as well as my experiences as a traveler.

Education:

I have a BFA from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Artistic Influences:

I have a Master's degree in psychology and worked in health care for many years. I took a risk and went on a sabbatical to study art in Rome, Italy. The experience totally changed my life, including falling in love! I began to experiment with black and white photography and then moved on to painting. Initially, I did a lot of figurative work, but have ended up loving abstraction. All of my work is in oil and my canvases are generally 36" x 36" or larger.
Significant influences are Joan Mitchel, Jennifer Bartlett, Agnes Martin, Euan Uglow and Richard Deibenkorn.
