This artwork captures a solitary figure standing on a weathered concrete pier, jutting into a broad, muddy river. The individual, dressed in dark attire, is poised dramatically as they blow into a large, horn-like instrument, their figure strikingly silhouetted against the lush, expansive backdrop of dense, green rainforest. The visual contrast between the human presence and the overwhelming natural environment emphasizes themes of communication and isolation. The river, reflecting a somber hue under an overcast sky, adds a sense of gravity and introspection. This composition deftly explores the intersection of humanity and nature, evoking questions about connection and the power of sound as a bridge. Other Possible Forests unfolds a horizon of vital potentialities, where listening serves as a conduit for exploring the natural world, immersing us in its molecular memory and transposing the sounds and language of the Colombian jungle into the urban realm. Following the course of the Guaviare River to Cerro Azul in the San José del Guaviare region, María José Arjona meticulously gathers the sonic heritage of this pivotal and liminal territory. This act of listening emerges as a political gesture, positing the body as a site of resonance and a nexus between disparate worlds. The photographs emerge as one of the multifaceted layers constituting the totality of the project, forging a nuanced relationship between the creation of visual imagery and the soundscapes that inherently envelop them. Central to these compositions, the copper cone invites the viewer to engage in an act of listening that transcends visual perception. This perfor-imaginative exercise hints at the emergence of another forest beyond the perceptible, an affective space shared by beings that co-vibrate with the planet. In this context, distinctions between the artist's corporeal presence, what we conventionally classify as nature, and the observer become increasingly porous; dissolution manifests as the sonic dimensio permeates the visual horizon, submerging anthropocentric narratives and situating us within a less predictable yet profoundly affective realm.

Presentation
María José Arjona (b.1973 in Santa Fe de Bogotá, Colombia) lives and works in her native Bogota.
The Kiss was a self-taken photograph and was part of her solo exhibition in New York at the Art Space Location One, in 2012. The Kiss maps a system uniting two bodies. It is a gesture magnified by the use of sound emerging from the action of kissing and intensified by the working presence of the performer's body.
“The Kiss" (is a long durational performance), a breathing system where the performer's body becomes the intersection enabling the entire organism to work, reveals the intricate rhythm between lungs, fluids, and muscles while kissing. The body is the kiss: the plane of action created by it. This intersecting plane finds its translation into sound via the repetitive action of inflating and deflating two huge latex balloons."
Maria José Arjona is a performance artist focused on affirming the body through long durational exercises addressing process, time, memory and power. Her performances have been exhibited in museums and galleries in South America, Europe, China, and the United States and have been reviewed by Art Nexus, Arte Al Dia, The New York Times, The Guardian (UK), Whitewall Magazine, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, and many others. She participated as a re-performer at Marina Abramovic's retrospective at The Museum Of Modern Art in New York and started touring with her own work at The Madre Museum in Naples (Italy) as part of the program “Corpus, Arte In Azione". The itineration of this project includes locations in Bologna (Italy), Bergen and Oslo (Norway), New York (US), Vienna (Austria) and will end in 2010 in Colombia as part of the National Salon sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia.
Arjona will have a solo exhibition in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota.
