Richard Caldicott is an interdisciplinary artist that experiments with different materials and techniques, including drawing, photography and sculpture. This artist’s work on paper is made with ballpoint pen or inkjet printing, and bears an austere elegance through minimal drawings (with one or two lines) or buoyant and colorful forms and floating shapes; but all of them are inextricably linked through their minimal aesthetic and focus.
Repetition is one of many often used elements in Caldicott’s work – it echoes the art making of the Minimalism period. Caldicott use of camera to record collages and constructions has created a unique aesthetic niche that manages to reference iconic modernism without reverting to familiar forms.
Since the artist’s acclaimed series featuring Tupperware in the 1990s, Richard Caldicott has continually challenged photographic codes of representation in favor of new aesthetic and symbolic intentions. Employing traditional analog photography methods, Caldicott imbues his minimalist set of components with rich, vibrant color. The result is stunningly beautiful abstract work that is both self-contained and part of a larger dialogue, with nods to iconic minimalism, Color Field Painting, Concrete Art and pop reappropriation. In Caldicot's subsequent works from 2004, which can be seen in the current exhibition, Caldicott completely leaves the realm of the photographic object and deals directly with abstraction in itself.
Daniel Buren maintained that "colour is the most interesting thing in art because it is the only thing you cannot speak about". It is with this in mind that one should look at Caldicott's work. Working from collages and assemblages and then photographed stringently, by different techniques and presented as a photographic object in itself, his work has evolved, where. the object as subject has disappeared altogether, leaving only what were formerly colour backgrounds arranged in abstract, geometric compositions that constitute autonomous objects in their own right. In his images the collage, however, is never 'stuck down' it is only the process of photographing it that fixes the final result into an object.
Derek Horton* writes: "It is significant that Caldicott refers to his latest works as "Constructions", a term that simultaneously suggests the manual making of things and a connection to constructivism and architecture. Furthermore there is also a direct link to the minimal art era and Donald Judd's Specific Objects , holistic and unified art objects that are neither painting nor sculpture.
For its maker and viewer alike, Caldicott's art involves looking back into constructivist art and modernist design, referencing its purity of form and, by indirect allusion at least its utopian agenda ...
Whilst his work may suggest that Caldicott is an 'unreconstructed modernist', it is arguable that it is impossible now to make work 'as' a modernist – one can only refer to modernism or to use a term beloved of post modern theorists 'cite it'. For much post modern art such citation relies on pastiche that critiques or even lampoons modernism and its values, but for some artists of Caldicott's generation, who were exposed to post modern pastiche at its peak in the 1980's, it is possible now to look back to modernism from a different perspective, to be outside it but remain in many ways respectful or admiring of it".
Caldicotts works are collected by important private and public collections like: Sir Elton John Collection, BP Amoco, Sammlung Wilde, Sammlung Peter C. Ruppert, Goldman Sachs, Merryll Lynch, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.

He studied at the Royal College of Art, London where he obtained his master in 1987.
TECHNIQUE
As an interdisciplinary artist, Richard Caldicott comes across materials and techniques, including drawing, photography and sculpture.
His works on paper, made with ballpoint pen and inkjet printing, reveal a bare sophistication whether it be with minimal drawings or with buoyant and colourful forms.
Caldicott’s photograms and paper negative series consist of diptychs with the cut-out paper negative placed on the left and the photogram on the right.
INSPIRATIONS
Richard Caldicott's work has a relationship with architectural and musical structures, formalism and geometry, referring to modernist painters, designers and architects like Donald Judd, Max Bill, Barnett Newman and Ellsworth Kelly.
“I like artists who do other stuff. With Judd, I like his architecture, his furniture, his printmaking. It’s the same with Max Bill, somebody who crossed over into different fields, with furniture and architecture”

Sir Elton John, who is is a fervent collector of Richard Caldicott's work, wrote, "Richard has the unique ability to transform the medium of photography, creating something new, but still using the most traditional technique. Richard is one of those artists who elevates photography to an important and recognized form of contemporary expression."
In 1986 he was awarded the Paris Studio Award of the Cité Internationale des Arts, RCA. His work is featured in various international and corporate collections including Sir Elton John collection, Goldman Sachs and Clarks UK.
Caldicott has widely exhibited worldwide in solo, group exhibitions and art fairs including FIAC Paris, Art Basel, Paris Photo, Photo Miami and the Venice Biennale.
