Jake & Dinos Chapman, Jake not Dinos; Dinos not Jake
United Kingdom  • 1966

Presentation

Jake Chapman, born in 1966 in Cheltenham, and Dinos Chapman, born in 1962 in London, have been collaborative artists since 1990.

Jake and Dinos Chapman's artistic acclaim burgeoned with the creation of "Disasters of War," a vividly provocative piece reimagining Goya's series of etchings. Using meticulously reshaped and hand-painted miniature plastic figurines, they meticulously reconstructed Goya's scenes of brutality in three dimensions. Goya's influence, particularly his "Disasters of War," continues to echo through the Chapman brothers' artistic journey. In a bold move in 2003, Jake and Dinos Chapman acquired Goya's etchings, infusing them with their distinctive touch by painting clown and cartoon heads over the original faces.

Their art deliberately courts controversy, fearlessly delving into contentious themes such as Nazism, the Holocaust, and religious motifs. It thrives on an aesthetic that skews toward obscenity and horror. In their artistic expression, they borrow from art history and delve into philosophical and sociological theories, shaping a body of work intentionally laden with political and moral ambiguity. Jake and Dinos Chapman's art staunchly resists simplistic interpretation, inviting viewers into a realm where multiple perspectives coalesce.

The Chapman brothers' repertoire encompasses evocative titles such as "Unhappy Meal" and "Bedtime Tales," capturing the essence of their confrontational approach. Their art is a daring amalgamation of creativity and critique, where boundaries blur, and societal norms are challenged, making a mark within the art world.
