About the Artist: Romero Britto (Brazilian, born 1963) is an artist whose distinct graphic style blends Pop Art with Cubist-like abstraction. His colorful illustrations and figurines of Disney characters, animals, and figures utilize patches of geometric patterns and texture rendered in a fractured perspective. “As an artist, I feel lucky to have been given the gift of creativity so that I may share my vision of a better world," he stated. “I will never forget what it was like to be poor and that is why it is so important to me that my work be accessible to all people." Born on October 6, 1963 in Recife, Brazil, Britto is self-taught and credits a trip to Paris in 1983 to his interest in Modern masters like Picasso and Matisse. He has found commercial success through work with brand campaigns, including a commission for Absolut Vodka in 1989 that helped to launch his career. Britto's public installations can be found throughout the United States, Switzerland, and Brazil. He currently lives and works in Miami, FL where he owns the Britto Central Gallery.
Collector’s Guide
Romero Britto, born in 1963 in Recife, Brazil, is an internationally acclaimed pop artist whose vibrant, playful artworks have earned him recognition as one of the most influential artists of his generation. Known for his dynamic style that blends modern influences, bright colors, and a joyful approach to art, Britto's creativity continues to inspire people worldwide.
From a modest background with nine siblings, Britto's innate artistic ability allowed him to envision a larger, more beautiful world beyond his own. His self-taught journey began at an early age, using newspapers, cardboard, and scraps to bring his visions to life. In 1983, Britto moved to Paris, where the works of Matisse and Picasso deeply influenced his artistic growth. Following his success in European galleries, he moved to Miami, where he set up a public studio and immersed himself in the flourishing Pop Art scene. His relentless passion and bold style quickly caught the attention of art collectors and global brands.
Today, Britto's artwork graces galleries and museums in over 100 countries. His distinctive fusion of cubism and pop art has earned him the spotlight in prestigious exhibitions, including the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts at the Carrousel du Louvre in 2008 and 2010. In 2013, Britto was invited by Maria Elena and Carlos Slim Domit to exhibit at Museo Soumaya in Mexico, becoming the first living artist to do so. His collaborations with global brands like Pepsi, Apple, and Movado have helped reinvent their branding, while public figures, heads of state, and celebrities worldwide celebrate his work.
In December 2024, Britto teamed up with SEGA to launch the BRITTO x Sonic collection, featuring art and merchandise inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog. The collection was unveiled at Art Basel Miami, cementing Britto's position as a pop culture icon. To further extend his artistic legacy, Britto opened three new stores in South Florida in 2024—at Dadeland Mall, Las Olas Boulevard, and Town Center at Boca Raton. These new locations bring his vibrant, signature artwork to a broader audience, offering fans more opportunities to experience his creations.
Romero Britto is not only an artist but also an advocate for social change, using his art to support charitable organizations worldwide. He believes in the power of art as a tool for positive change and continues to champion causes close to his heart. As he famously says, "art is too important not to share," reflecting his dedication to spreading joy and hope through his colorful creations.
Britto's journey from a self-taught artist to an iconic figure in the global art scene showcases the power of creativity, resilience, and the endless possibilities for artistic expression. His influence continues to grow, making him a defining voice in contemporary art.
