Printed by Griffin Editions. Printed onto aluminum using dye-sublimation technology. This leading-edge process is made entirely possible by new advances in printing. Because the dyes are transferred directly into the metal surface of every photograph, the immediacy of the technique adds a distinctive physicality to the artist's exceptional photography, which has, for the past several years, explored the complex relationship between the physical state and the psychological one. Gesture and expression are examined in literal and metaphoric terms. There is contradiction in spite of directness, and a multiplicity of powerful implications is sensitively proposed.

Shirin Neshat, In Deference
Iran  • 1957

Presentation

Shirin Neshat, an Iranian artist who emigrated to the United States, is internationally recognized for her provocative works that explore themes of female identity, power and conflict in Islamic society. Her works, often in black and white, primarily use photography and videography to ask powerful questions about women's rights and cultural tensions.Born in Iran in 1957, Shirin Neshat left her country just before the Islamic Revolution to study in the United States. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, where she explored the visual arts. His prolonged absence from Iran and his return after many years profoundly influenced his artistic outlook, giving him a unique perspective on the radical changes in his native country.Neshat's work is immediately recognizable by its visual style marked by the use of black and white and often accompanied by calligraphic texts, integrating elements of Persian poetry and cultural symbols. She primarily uses photography and video to explore the complexities of identity and the contradictions of life in Islamic societies, particularly from the perspective of women. Her approach is both poetic and political, capturing female struggle and resilience.Shirin Neshat has exhibited in many prestigious institutions around the world. Her works have been presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and at the Venice Biennale where she won the International Prize. She also received the Silver Lion for Best Artistic Achievement. These distinctions demonstrate the scope and impact of his work in the field of contemporary art.Shirin Neshat's work is notable not only for its striking aesthetic but also for its deep commitment to questioning social and political norms. By exploring themes such as power, oppression and freedom, Neshat continues to inspire and provoke, affirming her crucial role in dialogues about art and society. His impact is not limited to art; she also influences discussions about the role of women in Islamic society, making her a leading figure in contemporary cultural and social debates.
