Artwork sold in perfect condition

Artwork location: Italy

Format : 2 Volumes, In-4° Typology : Print Suite
Edition of 100 copies, including 65 original lithographs by Giorgio De Chirico in the text.

This copy is in two volumes, unlike the standard edition printed in a unique volume. This edition is part of the only 6 made on Japan Supernacré Paper and has two separate suites of the same images respectively printed on China paper and on Japan Imperial Paper. Binders and covers are made of black leather, featuring on spine the author's name in golden letters with the volume title, illustrator name and only on the back of the second volume the word suites.

Front cover and frontispice of both volumes are made of red velvet. Luxury box in red and black marbled cardboard. Magnificent deluxe binding designed and manufactured by Georges Cretté, one of the Big Names of binding in 20th century, probably between '40s and '50s. Surname and name of the binder are impressed on internal part of front over of both the volumes, in golden letters. Beautiful and rare edition, one of the few still available in the market. One of the most important illustrated books of the 20th century, in perfect conditions. The volume is in perfect state, just as its pages and its prints.

It is the first and most important volume illustrated by Giorgio De Chirico, inventor of Painting and Metaphysics and precursor to some of the most important movements of the 20th century such as Surrealism. The illustrations of the Volume "Calligrammes" are reproduced in the Alfonso Ciranna catalog dedicated to Giorgio De Chirico on p. 38 from number 17 to number 82.

This artwork is shipped from Italy. Giorgio de Chirico, Calligrammes, by Guillaume Apollinaire and Giorgio De Chirico
Italy  • 1888  - 1978

Presentation

Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) was an Italian painter, sculptor and writer who invented metaphysical painting under the sign of revelation.

He moved to Paris in 1911 and first fascinated Guillaume Apollinaire who, in 1913, introduced the artist into his circle - Picasso, Derain, Max Jacob, Braque, Picabia, etc. - as well as Paul Guillaume, his first merchant.

The dreamlike, prophetic dimension, the subtle incongruities and the shifts observed in the work of Giorgio de Chirico have, from the beginning of the 1920s, immediate resonances on the nascent surrealism, from Magritte, Ernst to Picabia and Eluard. André Breton sees in the artist the demiurge of a “modern mythology" in formation (1920) before accusing him of anti-modernist regressions in 1926.
