Presentation

Born in 1941, Sigmar Polke was a German artist. Having fled from East to West Germany in 1953, Polke's interest in art began upon his arrival. He studied at the Düsseldorf Arts Academy before becoming a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Hamburg.

Oscillating between photography and painting, Polke's paintings began as abstract compositions before he switched to historical depictions. He co-founded the painting movement “Capitalist realism", a subversive anti-art style, alongside Gerhard Richter and Konrad Fischer.

Polke died in 2010. His works continue to perform well on the contemporary market. In 2015 Polke's landscape painting Dschungel (Jungle) sold for $27.1 million.
