Le clair-obscur, ou chiaroscuro, est l'une des principales techniques issues de la Renaissance. Elle est issue des mots italiens « chiaro », qui signifie clair ou lumineux, et « oscuro », qui signifie obscur ou sombre. En effet, cette technique fait référence à l'utilisation de forts contrastes pour obtenir une sensation de volume lors de la représentation de sujets tridimensionnels. Son avènement a constitué un développement artistique crucial, marquant une nouvelle ère dans l'art. Les peintres pouvaient désormais commencer à transmettre la profondeur par une lente gradation de la lumière et de l'ombre.
On dit souvent que la technique a été inventée par le maître de la Renaissance, Léonard de Vinci. Mais d'autres artistes importants l'ont développée et popularisée, notamment Le Caravage, Rembrandt, Vermeer et Goya. Inventée au XVème siècle, le clair-obscur est rapidement devenu une pratique courante pour tous les artistes. D'ailleurs, à la fin du XVIIème siècle, le terme était fréquemment utilisé pour décrire toute peinture, dessin ou édition qui utilisait des couleurs contrastées pour créer de la profondeur.
Un siècle après son avènement, Le Caravage a encore fait progresser cette technique pour en développer une nouvelle, qui a alors été qualifiée de « caravagesque ». Il s'agit d'un type de clair-obscur plus intense, qui utilise une source de lumière unique pour créer des contrastes encore plus marqués. Son utilisation dans l'art se traduit souvent par la dominance de l'obscurité dans la peinture, produisant un effet extrême et dramatique. Ses adeptes ont reçu le nom de « Caravagistes ».
