La façon de dépeindre l'immensité d'un panorama coloré, sans avoir à recréer minutieusement chaque détail, a contribué à faire évoluer certains styles de peinture. Généralement associées aux coups de pinceau plus lâches des impressionnistes, les grandes étendues de couleur ont également trouvé leur place dans l'art abstrait moderne au cours de la première moitié du 20ème siècle. D'après la théorie des couleurs dans l'art, les artistes utilisent la couleur pour évoquer des émotions dans leurs compositions, facilitant ainsi l'expression. Mais dans l'art abstrait, la couleur est utilisée dans sa forme la plus simpliste. Ainsi, peindre avec de grandes quantités de couleurs peut donner un sentiment de liberté, de célébration de la couleur, d'abondance. Step by step we went…We were fifteen days on the glacier…at every day’s advance more great, nameless peaks came into view…We gave names to these peaks, not very seriously, since we did not expect our discoveries to come to the attention of geographers.
