Rapide, bondé, sale, souterrain ou aérien, mais surtout pratique, le métro est un moyen de transport apparu pour la première fois en 1888 à Chicago. D’abord tracté par des locomotives à vapeur, il se modernise et finit par devenir entièrement électrique et parfois même sans conducteurs. Vers 1896, le métro se développe en Europe et est accueilli chaleureusement par le public en raison de sa rapidité et de sa grande capacité de voyageurs, pouvant transporter jusqu’à 700 personnes. Les artistes s'approprient petit à petit le métro qui devient dès lors une véritable galerie d’art souterraine. De nombreux artistes mondialement connus y font alors leurs débuts et une culture underground se crée rapidement. Street-art, œuvres d’arts et bien d’autres créations sont réalisés sous terre.
