Portraits néoclassiques
La peinture néoclassique est apparue au cours du 18ème siècle, une époque où la rationalité et la philosophie des Lumières ont influencé la société européenne et sa culture visuelle de manière exceptionnelle. Originaire de France, l'influence du néoclassique s'est rapidement répandue dans le monde entier. Ce style était plus académique et plus orienté vers l'histoire que le style décoratif rococo, qui était apparu juste avant. Les portraits néoclassiques du 18ème siècle se caractérisent par des formes claires, une palette de couleurs sombres et dépouillées, des sujets classiques et une faible profondeur.
Depuis le 18ème siècle, le néoclassicisme a connu de nombreux renouvellements dans le monde de l'art. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, alors que beaucoup cherchaient un « retour à l'ordre », les valeurs intemporelles et classiques associées au style ont été repopularisées. Des artistes tels que Pablo Picasso et André Derain, par exemple, ont affiché une plus grande sobriété et d'autres éléments néoclassiques dans leurs œuvres au cours de cette période.
L'héritage du portrait néoclassique continue d'inspirer les artistes contemporains du monde entier par la clarté de ses formes, sa perspective austère et linéaire et ses thèmes classiques. Si certains artistes d'aujourd'hui s'inscrivent clairement dans la continuité du portrait néoclassique, d'autres s'approprient des éléments spécifiques de la tradition pour les adapter à leur pratique.
