Sculpteurs modernes d'animaux
Les animaux ont toujours été des sujets importants dans la sculpture. Les sculpteurs égyptiens, par exemple, produisaient déjà des représentations naturalistes de bovins, d'ânes et d'hippopotames, tandis que les sculpteurs de la Chine ancienne réalisaient des sculptures animalières de petite échelle en bronze. En 1831, le sculpteur Antoine-Louis Barye hisse définitivement la sculpture animalière au rang d'art noble, grâce à son œuvre « Tigre dévorant un gavial » présentée au Salon de Paris. Cette sculpture marque le début du naturalisme et des représentations réalistes de la faune. La sculpture de l'époque s'applique alors à représenter méticuleusement la nature. Mais la sculpture moderne s'éloigne du réalisme avec des artistes comme Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso et Georges Braque. L'art abstrait, le cubisme et l'expressionnisme ont profondément influencé l'art moderne et la sculpture animalière. D'ailleurs, les effets de ce changement sont encore visibles dans des œuvres plus contemporaines, comme celles de Marie Ackers et Philippe Buil. Dans certains cas, la simplicité de leur travail rend hommage aux artistes français du 19e siècle comme Barye, à moins qu'ils n'utilisent le bronze et l'acier pour revisiter les formes classiques des animaux sous un prisme moderne. D'autres artistes contemporains comme Ti'Ou (Virginie Micheleau) utilisent eux la sculpture animalière comme un moyen de souligner l'action environnementale et le changement climatique. Face à l'incertitude qui entoure leur propre avenir, espérons que le monde animal continuera à jamais d'inspirer l'artiste par sa beauté et sa fragilité…
