La Maison Gaston
Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe
“Who better than artists to share authentic representations of our Creole territories? To dispel the unfamiliarity of our cultures? I propose that you rediscover us through the artists and the emotion that drives them in creating, in painting, in shaping the material. To give you, I hope, another image of our islands.”
The Gaston House also embraces tradition, the know-how passed down from generation to generation. We believe that designers, by collaborating with artisans, by using local materials, by perpetuating ancestral know-hows, also tell the story of our islands. Each object, each sculpture is inscribed in a deep connection with its territory. This fusion between art, design, and artisanal craft is a celebration of the facets of our culture. A space where identities meet, merge, and create unexpected artistic expressions.
We consider that every artist, every work, brings a unique nuance and weaves the living fabric of our House. Some question our relationship to the world as island inhabitants, others explore the racial interactions inherited from history, and still others evoke the syncretism of our spiritualities.
Our House makes these works dialogue and interprets them as fragments of a common narrative, an invitation to question stereotypes and to rethink cultural symbols. The Gaston House aspires to be a catalyst to amplify the voices of artists from Creole territories. Then our islands will become the starting point for unique visual narratives, celebrating the diversity of ways of being in the world.
