Dian Gurbada is an Indonesian painter born in 1975 whose work brings the memory of Sundanese villages into contemporary painting. Through acrylic and mixed media, he explores the places that shelter us and the landscapes that shape our sense of belonging.
Traditional rooftops, rice granaries and village structures provide the starting point for his compositions. Their silhouettes unfold into angular planes, layered colour and expressive marks. Architecture gradually merges with its surroundings: a roof becomes a hillside, a building dissolves into vegetation, and familiar forms open into imagined landscapes.
His palette moves from luminous turquoise and warm orange to deep indigo and vivid red. These contrasts create different atmospheres, while visible textures give the painted surface a sense of history. The eye follows fragments of buildings through passages of colour, discovering an image that reveals itself gradually.
For Gurbada, home carries the meaning of protection, shared experience and return. His paintings reflect an attachment to local heritage while allowing each viewer to recognise something of their own memories within the composition.
Born on 27 July 1975 and trained in Fisheries at Diploma IV level, he has presented work in Ciamis, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. His experience includes exhibitions in 2023 and 2025, live painting, and mural projects for coffee shops and schools.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Dian Gurbada creates paintings in which the warmth of inhabited places meets the freedom of abstraction.
