Description
A passage of fiery colour opens within a textured turquoise field. In Wanderer’s Light, Dian Gurbada gives warmth a sense of direction, creating an abstract composition that invites the eye to move through layers of colour and material.
Orange, crimson and yellow form the painting’s principal focus. Their intensity is moderated by pale blue marks that cross and interrupt the warmer passages. Around them, turquoise expands towards the right, while dark blue-green areas gather along the left.
A second, softer illumination appears in cream and pale green. This quieter passage balances the warm centre and introduces a different rhythm, allowing the composition to alternate between concentrated energy and atmospheric openness.
COLOUR WITH A PHYSICAL PRESENCE
The surface retains the evidence of its making. Thickened passages, scraped-looking edges and overlapping marks give the painting a tactile character. Some areas appear densely worked; others reveal broader movements of colour.
Light reveals these variations, bringing attention to the material as well as the image. From a distance, the composition reads through its strong warm–cool contrast. Closer observation reveals smaller encounters between individual marks and layers.
LANDSCAPE, MEMORY AND SUGGESTION
Dian Gurbada’s practice draws on the relationship between architecture, landscape and cultural memory in West Java. Traditional villages and the idea of shelter inform his approach to space, even when a painting moves towards abstraction.
In Wanderer’s Light, fragments seem to emerge and dissolve within the colour. The viewer may discover suggestions of terrain, structures or reflected light, without being directed towards one fixed scene.
The title evokes an encounter during a journey. A handwritten message on the reverse gives this idea a personal dimension:
“May this light fill your space and heart with warmth.”

Presentation
Dian Gurbada is an Indonesian painter born in 1975 whose work brings the memory of Sundanese villages into contemporary painting. Through acrylic and mixed media, he explores the places that shelter us and the landscapes that shape our sense of belonging.
Traditional rooftops, rice granaries and village structures provide the starting point for his compositions. Their silhouettes unfold into angular planes, layered colour and expressive marks. Architecture gradually merges with its surroundings: a roof becomes a hillside, a building dissolves into vegetation, and familiar forms open into imagined landscapes.
His palette moves from luminous turquoise and warm orange to deep indigo and vivid red. These contrasts create different atmospheres, while visible textures give the painted surface a sense of history. The eye follows fragments of buildings through passages of colour, discovering an image that reveals itself gradually.
For Gurbada, home carries the meaning of protection, shared experience and return. His paintings reflect an attachment to local heritage while allowing each viewer to recognise something of their own memories within the composition.
Born on 27 July 1975 and trained in Fisheries at Diploma IV level, he has presented work in Ciamis, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. His experience includes exhibitions in 2023 and 2025, live painting, and mural projects for coffee shops and schools.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Dian Gurbada creates paintings in which the warmth of inhabited places meets the freedom of abstraction.
