Biography

Lucas Stolz (born 1985 in Basel, Switzerland) is a contemporary artist exploring the boundary between writing and painting. Living and working in Barcelona, his practice investigates how signs, tools, and materials transform language into a new visual experience that challenges traditional legibility.

Stolz studied Graphic Design at HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd, graduating in 2009, and completed a Master's degree in Illustration at IDEP Barcelona in 2010. Since 2011, he has worked with renowned clients, studios, and brands as an artist and designer, specializing in calligraphy. Alongside his commercial work, he has developed an independent artistic practice, exhibiting in group shows since 2012 and participating in international art fairs since 2021. He is represented by Max54 Gallery.

At the core of Stolz's work is the understanding of calligraphy as a painterly act. Writing becomes a process of image-making in which words dissolve into gestures and traces, reflecting the movement of the body. His practice explores the invention and transformation of signs, the rhythm of continuous writing, the creation of custom tools, and the use of materials drawn from diverse writing cultures.

Through physically demanding and experimental techniques, Stolz distorts, fragments, and multiplies the line, giving it a distinctive energy and temperament. His work challenges conventional notions of authorship, raising questions about whether the hand, the tool, or the surface is the true creator.

In Stolz's visual language, meaning remains fluid. Signs are abstracted and destabilized, becoming a form of “anti-writing" that both suggests and resists interpretation. As legibility dissolves, the viewer is invited into an open field of perception, where a new, spatial visual language emerges beyond the written word.
