Description
A first seed, held within the warmth of becoming.
Yusa Widiana approaches the beginning of life through colour, relief and symbolic form. A warm reddish core opens within a surrounding movement of green, turquoise and blue. At its centre, a gold-toned figure extends its limbs, accompanied by small rounded forms that catch the light.
The textured surface gives this intimate composition a tactile presence. Raised contours, scattered relief details and softly layered colour create a relationship between the concentrated centre and the atmosphere around it.
For Widiana, the central figure represents Cikal—the First Seed, a memory before form. He associates it with Sukma, the soul entering existence, while the surrounding luminous orbs evoke cells dividing to create life.
The artist relates the painting to his interpretation of Sangkan Paran, asking where we originate and where we return. The work expresses a shared connection between humanity and nature, offering a quiet reflection on renewal: each ending can become the seed of a new beginning.

Presentation
Yusa Widiana is an Indonesian contemporary artist whose practice connects painting, cultural identity and community life. Born in 1971 in Purwakarta, he lives and works in Tasikmalaya, West Java. He holds a degree in Fine Arts Education from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung.
Working in oil, watercolor and mixed media, as well as murals, Widiana explores the meeting of local heritage and contemporary urban experience. Hybrid identity is central to his approach: the ways traditions, places and everyday encounters shape who we become.
His movement between studio painting and public art allows him to explore different relationships with the viewer. A painting invites a personal encounter; a mural enters a space shared by many. Across these formats, his work maintains a close connection with the communities and cultural environments around him.
His solo exhibitions include Babak Baru, GLOCAL, Nature and Gotong Royong Reborn. He has also participated in group exhibitions in Germany, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates, alongside numerous presentations in Indonesia.
His national exhibition history includes Galeri Soemardja, Galeri Popo Iskandar, Galeri Nasional Indonesia and Bentara Budaya, Yogyakarta. He received second place in a West Java provincial painting competition and contributed to teams awarded first place in regional mural competitions.
Widiana's practice offers an evolving conversation between individual expression and shared experience, bringing Indonesian cultural perspectives into a broader contemporary dialogue.
