Description
Intense shades of blue and deep black define the composition of this abstract painting. Equally wide vertical color fields establish a calm, steady rhythm. Narrow black lines separate the lighter and darker blue fields, emphasizing their individuality. The broader black areas introduce powerful yet calming visual accents.
The interplay of different shades of blue creates a subtle sense of spatial depth. While the lighter fields appear to advance, the darker ones seem to recede. Despite the intensity of the colors, the composition develops a quiet, almost meditative quality. The repetition of forms reinforces this impression, giving the painting a balanced and self-contained structure.
The painting is created with pure pigments on hand-primed Belgian linen. The blue layers are applied thinly, allowing the slightly irregular texture of the linen to remain visible. This gives the color fields a lively surface and enhances their perceived depth. The thickly applied, textured black areas provide a distinct material contrast.
The work explores the relationship between color, rhythm, and geometric order. A subtle tension emerges between the clarity of the forms and the vitality of the painted surface. Its particular color qualities and material presence become most apparent when experienced in person.
Presentation
Klaus Hoffmann, born 1957
In his works, Klaus Hoffmann explores the interactions of colors and forms, the special color contrasts and the effect of pure monochrome color surfaces.
In doing so, he avoids figurative associations and orients himself towards the art movement of Concrete Art.
He mostly uses geometric forms, which can also show deviations and breaks.
His aim is to create works that only represent themselves and do not refer to things that are outside the pictorial space, in the visible world.
They should also enable a sensual experience of the colors and forms and their interactions.
He works with pure, high-quality pigments, which are rubbed into aqueous acrylic dispersion and applied in numerous thin layers to give the color surfaces depth and enhance their luminosity.
Self-primed raw linen, whose natural structure remains recognizable, serves as the picture support.
This incorporates the picture support into the work and creates an autonomous overall work.
Hoffmann was educated at the Wiesbadener Freie Kunstschule and Freie Kunstakademie Frankfurt, with a focus on painting, composition, and color theory.
