Description
Abstraction unfolds here through a rigorous research into matter. The gesture is direct. The artist uses the knife to superimpose the layers of oil. This technique creates a marked relief. Every mark remains visible on the canvas.
The composition is organized into vertical and horizontal bands. A jerky rhythm is established. The forms intertwine in a game of geometric repetitions. It is a work of precision on structure.
The palette is limited to neutral tones. White, gray, and black dominate. Ocher shades appear intermittently. These subtle hues capture the light. They create changing reflections according to the angle of view.
Space becomes tactile. The contrast between dense areas and light areas brings visual depth. The gaze circulates between the interstices of the paint. The canvas becomes a mineral exploration ground. The whole results in a sober and balanced harmony. The work ends with a tight arrangement of thick touches.
Presentation
Alain Bécanne is a painter, born in Toulouse in 1957.
Alain got interested in painting only in his forties. Initially he was interested by figurative painting, and realized his first exhibitions quite quickly.
Finally in 2002, Alain changed gears and turned towards abstraction, a lyrical abstraction mainly inspired by great names of movement. This change has an influence on his manner of painting and technique.
Alain's work around abstraction quickly turned towards the question of light and its reflections. Whether the canvas is monochrome, black or white, the artist is always able to create light. He likes to work on shades, reflections that each color has to offer.
Light is an important part of Alain's paintings, he doesn't stick to only one way of processing but considers it to be an effect, a way to highlight his subject.
Material is a key aspect in Becanne's work, the painter likes to work with layers and thickness, each of his movements is visible, the paint on his canvas portrays image of his trace.
