Description
This work is a unique sculptural floral painting created by Tatjana Jermolajeva in 2025.
A vertical line of six crimson roses divides the canvas into two contrasting material worlds. Violet, blue-grey and silver tones move through the left side, while charcoal, bronze and muted-gold formations deepen the right. The flowers emerge between these fields in layered shades of burgundy, dusty pink and red.
Rather than merely depicting roses, Jermolajeva constructs them physically in acrylic relief. Their raised petals interact with light and cast real shadows across the surface. Circular forms surrounding the central flowers appear like distant blooms, traces or memories gradually absorbed into the darker background.
The composition expresses both vulnerability and strength. The flower is traditionally temporary, but here it becomes a lasting sculptural presence. Colour, texture and matter combine to suggest passion preserved through time.
Every layer was shaped and painted by hand. Variations in relief, gesture and pigment make the work entirely unique and impossible to reproduce identically.
The original canvas is professionally mounted on a 2 cm deep solid hardwood stretcher. It is unframed and ready to hang.
Hand-signed on the front and signed, titled, dated and identified on the reverse. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Abstract Art Gallery and a lifetime gallery guarantee are included.
Presentation
Tatjana Jermolajeva, known professionally as Tana Jerm (b. 1966, Latvia), is a contemporary Latvian artist and artistic researcher whose practice explores the expressive possibilities of matter, texture, and surface. Her work develops at the intersection of painting, material experimentation, and visual research, where technical knowledge and intuition become inseparable.
Rather than limiting herself to a single medium or process, Tana Jerm investigates relationships between color, transparency, density, layering, gesture, and relief. Through continuous experimentation, she constructs complex surfaces in which materials become active elements of the composition.
Texture lies at the heart of her artistic language. Layers accumulate, intersect, reveal, and conceal one another, creating depth and a physical presence that subtly changes according to light, distance, and viewing angle.
Her approach as an artistic researcher is fundamental to this process. Each artwork becomes a field of investigation—a space to observe material behavior, test possibilities, and discover unexpected visual relationships. Technical control is balanced by intuition and spontaneity, allowing experimentation to remain visible within the finished work.
At the center of her practice is transformation: the moment when color, matter, texture, and gesture merge into a unified visual experience. Created individually by hand, her works invite close observation and reveal tactile details that unfold gradually.
Through this dialogue between research and intuition, Tana Jerm has developed a distinctive contemporary language characterized by tactile richness, material sensitivity, depth, and presence.
Tatjana Jermolajeva (Tana Jerm) is represented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Latvia.
