Dark Abstraction
In the realm of dark abstraction, artists explore the interplay of contrasts, materials, and deep tonalities, positioning themselves within a lineage that ranges from abstract expressionism to certain minimalist explorations. These works question perception, light, and depth through refined or intensely textured compositions, where black, brown, and muted tones do not signify absence but instead become vehicles of emotional intensity and pictorial presence.
Gesture, material, and surface play a central role: layered glazes, dense impasto, background work, and effects of transparency all contribute to the construction of visual worlds that are both austere and deeply sensitive. Artists such as Pierre Soulages, whose work around “outrenoir" redefined the relationship to dark color, or Mark Rothko in his later series, paved the way for a singular exploration of this restrained palette.
On Artsper, this selection highlights the richness of a pictorial territory often associated with restraint, yet marked by a great diversity of formal approaches and artistic intentions.
