Description
Dated 1989 and issued in an edition of fifty copies, numbered and signed by hand, this sheet belongs to the Continents series of Fernando Bellver, born in Madrid in 1954 and among the most technically accomplished Spanish printmakers of his generation. Bellver has worked almost exclusively in graphic media since the mid-1970s, combining etching, aquatint, carborundum and collage in works of considerable physical presence, and has been closely associated with the workshops that sustained the Madrid print scene of the transition years. The Continents series takes the cartographic division of the world as a pretext for a sequence of large emblematic compositions, of which the companion sheet devoted to America is also held in this collection. Bellver's habitual subjects, the bullfight, jazz, the city and the map, share an interest in codified systems that can be dismantled visually.
