Description
Dated 1978 and issued in an edition of seventy-five copies, Room is a companion to the sheet Marienza Cut Out of the same year, format and edition held in this collection. The interior is one of Jorge Castillo's governing subjects: a room in his work is rarely a setting and usually a condition, an enclosure whose furniture, windows and occupants are drawn with obsessive linear attention until the space becomes airless. Castillo, born in Pontevedra in 1933, spent his formative years in Buenos Aires and worked subsequently in Geneva, Madrid, Berlin and New York, and this cosmopolitan formation accounts for the distance between his drawing and the informalist orthodoxy dominant in Spain during the same decades. The horizontal sheet measures 70 by 100 centimetres. His work entered international collections early, and is held by the Museo Reina Sofía, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Berlinische Galerie.
Presentation
Jorge José Castillo Casalderrey (born June 16, 1933) is a Spanish-born painter and sculptor. For most of his childhood, he and his family lived in Argentina. Since 1962, he has maintained residences in both Barcelona and New York City.
Jorge Castillo greatly admired Pablo Picasso, and that influence shows in his paintings, etchings, and lithographs. His steel sculpture Homage to the Cyclist stands in the Plaça de Sants in Barcelona.
