Description
Mare Nostrum 2, an etching with aquatint and hand colouring of 1985 by Josep Guinovart (Barcelona, 1927-2007), 36 by 54 cm, in an edition of fifty. It is the second of three sheets bearing this title in the collection, all of the same year, technique, format and edition size, so that only the images distinguish them. Guinovart came to prominence in the nineteen-fifties and by 1985 had long since established a language in which colour is applied as substance, black is used structurally, and the picture surface bears the evidence of physical working. Hand colouring an intaglio impression continues that logic into the print, introducing variation across the edition and a materiality that the plate alone cannot supply. The title claims the Mediterranean in its Roman formulation, our sea, a phrase Guinovart's generation of Catalan artists used without irony.
Presentation
After studying at the school of Decorative Arts of Barcelona and his first exhibition in 1948, he won a scholarship in 1953 from the French Institute to study in Paris for five months. On his return to Barcelona, he began creating some abstract artwork resembling a collage. In the 60s, his work took a political perspective. The artist was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement and made many propaganda posters for this cause.
In the 70s, he started creating some unconventional pieces with the constant use of three-dimensional elements, mostly on large scale. He shows through his work that the categories "realism" and "asbtract" are outdated today.
In 1994, a museum dedicated to his work was inaugurated in Agramunt, the town where his mother was born and to which he has always been specially attached.
He died December 2007 at age 80 after a stroke.
