Description
Dated 2014 and issued in an edition of seventy-five copies, Inverted T takes its title from the geometric figure that organises the composition. Enrique Brinkmann, born in Málaga in 1938, is a painter of the line above all: a continuous filamentary mark, drawn or scored, that in his works on metal mesh passes through the support itself so that image and structure coincide. Against that habitual dissolution of form, the naming of a discrete geometric element is significant, since it announces a composition organised around a stated axis rather than an open field. Brinkmann's work has been associated with scientific imaging and with the diagram, though he has consistently declined illustrative readings, insisting that the line generates its own necessity. The sheet measures 99.5 by 69.5 centimetres, among the largest formats in this collection. He was awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes in 2015 and is represented in the Museo Reina Sofía and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga.
Presentation
A self taught painter and writer, in 1950 he started developing a singular and changing practice, mixing poetry of forms and abstraction of colors, between figuration and non-figuration. A painter of bodies and faces, he captivates with his fantastic bestiary and creates an spectacular synthesis of the Expressionism of the early century, surrealism and postmodern abstract research.
His work has been exhibited in some of the bigggest cities of Europe as well as in the group exhibition called "Spanish Art Tomorrrow" presented in New York and Washington in the beginning of the 80s.
