Description
This black sandstone sculpture captures a moment of pure joy. The little bonze, sitting in his armchair, seems caught in full laughter. The facial expression is treated with great anatomical precision. The open mouth and squinted eyes convey a spontaneous emotion.
The chromatic contrast structures the composition. The dark grey of the body emphasizes the materiality of the skin. In contrast, the sun yellow robe in Roussillon cocoon brings immediate luminosity. The texture of the garment is worked irregularly, creating a tactile relief.
The base recalls the natural rock with its ochre tone and massive appearance. This base anchors the figure in a terrestrial reality while accentuating the lightness of the expression. The work on the bare hands and feet reinforces the human and vulnerable aspect of the subject. The whole rests on a balance between the roughness of the material and the finesse of the expressed feeling. The piece plays with volumes to direct the gaze towards the top of the face.
