Jean-François Spricigo

Jean-François Spricigo, born February 3, 1979 in Tournai, Belgium, is a Belgian multidisciplinary artist. His preferred languages are writing, photography, theater and video.He left school at 16 to join the artistic photography section at the Institut Saint-Luc in Tournai. At the age of 17, he noticed on his contact sheets how much more relevant the beginnings of his films were than all the photographs meticulously framed following school instructions. Thus, he becomes aware of the importance of being available for the event rather than wanting to control it. Letting chance happen - without prerequisites - in one's work becomes the very argument for its renewal.His first encouragement came from Antoine d'Agata and Christian Caujolle in France and Jean-Louis Godefroid in Belgium.His first personal exhibition took place in 2004 at the Parvis in Tarbes, curated by Guy Jouaville5.In 2008, his meeting with Agathe Gaillard was decisive and therefore legitimized his place among collectible photographic artists. Agathe represented him and exhibited him several times until the handover of his gallery in 2012. For her last exhibition, she confided to him: “I opened the gallery with Ralph Gibson, I closed it with you6”.He is today represented by the Camera Obscura7 galleries in Paris, Louis Stern Fine Arts8 in Los Angeles, and the A-galerie in Brussels.His work has been regularly exhibited internationally since 2004, in private galleries and museums and public institutions.Jean-François Spricigo regularly runs creative workshops for all audiences. He has notably taught in several higher arts schools and at the University of the Sorbonne.In 2023, his book “we the horizon will remain alone”, published by Le Bec en l'air, won the Nadar Prize.
