Biography
Hongyu Zhang began training in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting at an early age. He graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts de Mongolie Intérieure, specialising in engraving, and then from the École des Beaux-Arts de Versailles.
In his early years, the contemporary artist's style was abstract and highly colourful. Marked by the death of his mother, colours disappeared from his works in 2006. Black and white took over. Shades of grey then dominated his colour palette.
Hongyu Zhang uses both traditional Chinese techniques, such as Indian ink, and acrylics, oils and pastels. Her canvases are marked by Western sources of inspiration, particularly engraving.
Her work revolves mainly around the line. Each line, each mark, symbolises strength. The whole structures the energy of the canvas. In this way, the artist conveys the movement, rhythm and vitality drawn from the music that accompanies the creation of her works.
