Biography

Gerda Wegener was a Danish painter and illustrator. Born in 1886, Wegener studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Wegener's artwork challenges stereotypical depictions of gender and sexual identity, as she inverts the male gaze through her eroticized depictions of women. Drawing inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement, Wegener's works are characterized by their sensuality and beauty.

Wegener and her partner, Lili Elbe, inspired the 2016 film “The Danish Girl". Wegener died in Denmark, in 1940.
