Henni Alftan

Henni Alftan was born in 1979 in Helsinki, Finland; she has been living and working in France since 1998.

"I ponder upon the apparition of the image, about its relationship to the thing, the object, the matter and the medium that embodies it. As Duchamp said, the painting is the apparition of an appearance. My style of painting is gestural, but has a certain mannerism, because mannerism is less interested in representing the object than in manifesting artistic tricks, putting art into representation. I try to make each piece a critical image of itself. Or even make it the thing and the image at the same time. In my work, painting and what it represents are in a close mimesis relationship, concerning the history of painting and its images as well as the physical qualities of the painting itself."
