Stéphane Compoint was born in 1961, he became a professional photographer in 1979 and a journalist in 1982. After having worked with several French news agencies, he became an independent photojournalist in 2002.

He worked with the most important French and international magazines, for which he produced mainly cultural, historical, scientific or environmental stories. He is also specialized in mid-aerial photography with an ultra light remote photo-balloon, making pictures at an altitude between 15 and 1500 feet, even at a very short to the feature (5 feet). The advantages of such a technique become obvious when one is confronted to his photographs of Paris.

Expert in underwater photography, no matter the context: tropical (Bahamas), polar (North Pole) or archaeological (The Lighthouse of Alexandria); he also participates in extreme expeditions (Abel discovery in Chad, Erebus expedition in Antarctica). He is the author of 14 books and had 10 exhibitions, received 10 photographic awards (including two World Press Photo, for "The Desert Firefighters in Kuwait" in 1992 and for "The Alexandria Lighthouse" in 1996.
