Presentation

David Veroone was born in France in 1984. Passionate about typography and calligraphy, he studied the technique at the St Luc Institute in Tournai. He creates glyphs and invents fonts. Alongside his studies, he discovered graffiti (more particularly tagging) and immersed himself in the strength and spontaneity of this universe. No pseudonym, no gaining notoriety, only a search for the “perfect gesture” as in calligraphy. He then uses texts, often without punctuation or automatic writing.

His pictorial universe then evolves towards a raw style where the movement of the brush spontaneously dictates the final shape of each letter. The white surface left unpainted contributes to the balance of the work itself and creates an effect of depth.

He then uses cutting, papercut, to accentuate this aspect. The white of the sheet is subtle, and the calligraphy is exposed, projecting its profile in cast shadows.

By superimposing his papercuts, he creates a parallel with the walls constantly repainted with graffiti, and presents them to us as layers.

*Automatic writing is a mode of creation heavily used by the surrealists. It consists of writing as quickly as possible, without control of reason, without any concern for grammatical coherence or respect for vocabulary; between sleep and waking.
