Presentation

Gilles Duménil was born in 1945; he lives and works in Lyon. He studied at the Beaux-Arts School of Macon. He is regularly exhibited in France and Switzerland.

It is during a journey to Italy in 1973/74 that Gilles Duménil lives an "ecstatic vision" in front of the architectural heritage: the harmonious proportions of the assembly, the simplicity of the volumes generating areas composed by shadows and light, the consuming light to which the shadow resists, will lead him to a work named "Demeures". It is with oil, for its preparations and the slowness it imposes, that he expresses himself on the linen canvases.

" The large houses reassure and calm me in the same way as humble but strong persons. It is the feeling I try to pass on by drawing them most of the time all over the canvas, leaving very little space to the surrounding landscape to divert the eye of the spectator."

For his landscapes, the Himalayan bark paper, contrasting, marked of irregular stains, is his second favorite support. By a long process of appropriation, he washes and irons the paper, and takes advantage of the leaf to inscribe his image, adapting to the unpredictable reactions of this so particular paper.
