Biography
After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Angers, Jean Larivière (1940) began experimental artistic research, mixing various media such as photography, painting and cinema.
Supported by the surrealist painter Roberto Matta for his animation work Never Always (1960-1970), Jean Larivière laid his foundations in experimental cinema as an assistant to Chris Marker, having the opportunity to share projects with Salvador Dali.
His artistic universe, characterized by the dualism between naive daydreaming and strong technical engineering, opens the doors to the advertising photography sector. From the 1970s, the visual research of Jean Larivière quickly became a photographic reference in the service of magazines. The originality and delicacy of his creations were spotted by Louis Vuitton in 1978, the year that marked the start of a collaboration that would last more than thirty years.
Since 2004, Jean Larivière has continued his plastic research around the notion of portrait and identity, opening the doors of his personal mythology to us.
