Biography
Hester Scheurwater (1971) is a Dutch artist. She graduated from the School of Art of Amsterdam and from the Royal academy of Art in La Hague, she currently practices a rigorous, subversive, reflexive and feminist art.
She draws her inspiration from the root of luxury and eroticism to tear and divert it.
With her self-portrait covers, she represents the role of the woman as a sexual object. Hester Scheurwater photographs herself infront of a mirror, capturing an external image imbricated of her internal thoughts. "the self-images in a mirror are my way of reacting to the alterated and false media images, which constantly appeal to our imagination, without intending to be taken too seriously", she explains. The artist wants to destroy the "subject-object" relation by bypassing the role of victim. Her photographs are sexually explicit, without lacking delicacy and a touch of lyricism. She deposits a layer of aesthetism, a touch of irony, and a surge of sedition. Her work is explosive but specially disturbing. It evokes the sexualization of society.
Her pieces are exhibited in prestigious places, including at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Naarden Festival. The Stedelik Museum Zwolle in the Netherlands put the work of the artist on the spotlight by dedicating a complete exhibition to his work. Hester Scheurwater became famous worldwide for her pornographic self-portraits on Facebook.
