Auke Cornelis Sonnega (Leeuwarden, 1910 - The Hague, 1963) was a Dutch artist, best known for his paintings he made on the islands of Bali and Java. He spent a large part of his life in Indonesia indeed. In 1957, he returned to the Netherlands. Europeans Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet introduced Western themes (including the portrait) and techniques to Bali. Their work had a major impact on the work of Auke Sonnega. He first worked as a designer in Batavia. He later traveled around Java and Bali and made travel stories for local newspapers. Because of his experiences with the country and the population, he decided to focus entirely on drawing and painting.
