Biography
Born in 1915 in Dublin and died in 2003 in New-York, Jacob Semiatin was an Irish artist.
His family moved to New-York in the 20's. The painter stayed there till he died. Right from the 30's, he exhibited his work with Jackson Pollock and Nicolas de Staël. After the war, he gave up figuration. He managed to impose himself on the American artistic scene during the 40's and 60's, putting forward a lyrical abstraction style of painting. He became famous and was able to exhibit in the best New York galleries, including Léo Castelli.
Institutions bought his paintings like hot cakes and displayed them. James J Sweeneye, the director of the Guggenheim museum describes his painting as natural, "fresh, spontaneous, and intuitive with his composition". His paintings are part of public collections especially at the Houston Museum of Modern Art and the Irish Jewish Museum, but also in private collections such as the Ted Turner collection.
