The Eyes of Fear Are Wide is an Abstract Figurative Ink Drawing.
Fear shackles a person, depriving them of the freedom to create, grow, and move forward. Its form appears shapeless and disturbingly grotesque, yet the power of this sensation is illusory — one only needs the courage to look it in the eye.

“The Eyes of Fear Are Wide" is a monochrome drawing that captures the distorted essence of fear through hypnotic linework and abstract human form.

Executed in ink on soft grey paper, this artwork combines surrealism and psychological depth. The undulating lines both conceal and reveal, forming a figure that seems caught in a moment of internal battle. The facial features are empty — fear distorts perception, blurs identity, and amplifies the unknown. And yet, the composition suggests motion and potential: fear can be faced, transformed, and transcended.

Deep black ink on warm-toned grey paper

Yana Dmitrieva, The Eyes of Fear Are Wide
Montenegro  • 1981

Presentation

Yana Dmitrieva is a contemporary artist whose work explores emotions, fear, and the inner struggle for self-identification and expression. Born in Barnaul, Russia, in 1981, she currently lives and works in Herceg Novi, Montenegro.

A graduate of the Novoaltaysk State Art School and the Altai State Institute of Culture, Yana began her creative career in furniture and interior design. Over time, her focus shifted toward fine art, which became a deeply personal tool for reflection and emotional exploration.

Her move to Europe in 2022 marked a transformative chapter in her life. Personal and global upheavals became catalysts for artistic evolution, with her practice centering on the tension between external circumstances and internal conflict.

Yana works across various media and techniques. Her drawings in colored pencil and ink allow for introspection and fine detail, offering a meditative process well-suited to exploring complex ideas. She also paints in oil on canvas, drawn to the material’s richness and durability for expressing intense visual narratives.

Currently, she is developing a new series that delves into the complex relationship between the self and its inner contradictions. Her art functions as a visual diary—intuitive, emotionally charged, and grounded in lived experience.

In 2023 and 2024, Yana participated in two group exhibitions focused on urban-themed art at the Museum of Herceg Novi. She is now preparing for her first solo exhibition, where she will present her deeply personal and thought-provoking works.
