With Quelque part en Sicile (Somewhere in Sicily), Isabelle Rodde invites us into a vibrant interior where Mediterranean warmth blends with graphic elegance. The artist depicts two generously coloured armchairs in deep greens with rounded shapes, placed on a red and yellow striped rug that energises the space. In the background, a wall panel decorated with stylised suns radiates throughout the composition, giving the whole a sunny and luminous atmosphere.
The colour palette, dominated by greens, yellows and ochres, conveys all the vitality of a dreamy south, bathed in sunshine and history. A decade ago in Paris, she had a different life, a demanding job and lots of friends. Until a personal tsunami swept everything away. It was one of those tragedies from which one might never recover.
Isabelle could have given up, drowned herself; instead, she decided to move forward. Drawing strength from her lifelong passion for drawing and reconnecting with her roots, Isabelle armed herself with travel journals and coloured markers so that she could, anywhere and at any time, feed off what soothed her soul and transcribe it in a very personal style.
Although figurative, her sketches break free with a delightful freedom of proportion, while remaining faithful to their sources of inspiration.
These ideas come to me during long journeys or short getaways close to home, when I see beautiful objects, discover the décor of a hotel abroad, experience the atmosphere of a rural flea market or admire the original setting of a Parisian boutique.
This is how, step by step, stroke by stroke, the series Mes petits intérieurs (My Little Interiors) was born. Their common denominator is that they are 'comforting worlds where I felt safe and secure,' explains the illustrator.
First seen on her Instagram account, the series of drawings (signed Iza) was spotted by galleries. This recognition of her work encouraged the self-taught artist to continue her approach, and she is now thinking of compiling her illustrations, whose elegant and harmonious simplicity is so appealing and makes us feel good, into a book.
