Scarborough through the Bridge is an evocative coastal study, realised in Norman Long MAFA's characteristic medium of oil on board. This piece captures the bustling atmosphere and dynamic structure of Scarborough, framed by an architectural element, suggesting a fascinating interplay between the built environment and the natural light of the harbour. Long, a respected trustee of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art, is recognised for grounding his spontaneous, modern style in classical rigour. This technical foundation is channelled into his landscapes, creating expressive, yet structurally sound, images that place him firmly within the Modern Impressionist tradition.
The painting embodies the artist's dedication to direct observation, having been completed to ensure the faithful capture of fleeting atmospheric effects. In , the composition is anchored by the frame of the bridge itself, leading the eye to the bright focal point beyond. Long employs rich, suggestive brushwork to define the quality of the light—how it catches the stone of the structure, reflects off the water, and illuminates the distant scene. The aesthetic successfully balances academic strength with expressive freedom, prioritising atmosphere and the feeling of the coastal scene over minute detail.
This work is a strong example of Long's unifying theme of transient experience and sensitive observation, successfully merging architecture, light, and maritime life. His technique, validated by his expertise as an oil painter and status within distinguished bodies like the New English Art Club, confirms the high quality of his output. offers a technically authoritative painting that captures a quintessential British coastal view through the sensitive, contemporary eye of one of the UK's noted modern observational painters.

Presentation
Norman Long is a highly acclaimed British artist born in Preston in 1976. He received his BA in Fine Art from Newcastle University and furthered his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, where he was awarded a scholarship for postgraduate study in 2008.
Long has built a distinguished reputation as a portraitist and figurative painter, with his work frequently featured in prestigious exhibitions such as the BP Portrait Award and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He was notably awarded the coveted de Laszlo Award for his portrait of his father, Walter Long.
While known for his evocative figure compositions depicting people in everyday settings like cafés and on the street, Long is a versatile painter, equally proficient in still life and landscape. His light-filled oil paintings are characterised by a love for colour and a sensuous paint surface, capturing vibrant cityscapes and the subtle relationships between people in public spaces. He is an enthusiastic member of The Northern Boys outdoor painting group, often working en plein air.
Norman Long's paintings often carry a mysterious sense of an unfolding story, leaving the viewer to complete the narrative. His ability to transform mundane interactions into captivating and vivid scenes, capturing fleeting moments and the essence of daily life, makes his work truly unique. He has exhibited extensively in the UK and the US, holding countless solo shows and exhibiting with organisations such as the New English Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Long is also the author of a popular book on oil painting technique and a trustee of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art.
