From the series Fragments of Our Love Story Porcelain cup with sgraffito detailing
Overall size: 5 x 9 x 3 inches. Individual size: 5 x 3 x 3 inches.
“Your lipstick left a bruise..” Your lipstick left a bruise on my wrist. I tried to wipe it away, but my pulse is still thumping. The honey on your tongue left me sticky. Sweating sugar from my pores. My heart..
“Your pulsing giant heart..” Your pulsing giant heart bringing you to your knees. Praying while you pull it out. Shove it into the earth and let it be home. May flowers grow where the emptiness lives.
“Carry the song..” Carry the song of my breath to your chest. And you will call me back. And like this we will find one another. No matter how lost we may be. I won’t give up.
This cup is one of 48 that make up the installation, “Fragments of Our Love Story.” These cups feature feminine forms which recall the Venus of Willendorf and other historical fertility objects The carvings include many of the artist’s own writings and flow from one cup to another. Just as we hold each other’s stories in pieces and parts, the cups now exist throughout time and space, with many collectors. No two have the exact same words, making each unique in body, color, and content.
This artwork showcases a series of uniquely shaped ceramic vessels adorned with intricate white lettering and geometric patterns on a dark background. The text spirals around the contours of the vessels, creating a dynamic visual tapestry that invites the viewer to explore every angle. The words seem to be poetic, adding a layer of narrative intrigue and depth. The sharp contrast between the dark ceramic surface and the crisp white text draws immediate attention, while the abstract patterns add texture and rhythm. Each vessel's form appears slightly asymmetrical, enhancing its organic feel and emphasizing the handcrafted nature. This combination of text and form creates a compelling dialogue between art and literature, making the pieces captivating both visually and intellectually. The work's bold use of script and pattern melds traditional pottery with modern artistic expression, making it a standout in contemporary ceramics.

Presentation
Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.
Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.
She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.
Alex Hodge’s work has been exhibited in various galleries and institutions across the United States. Through powerful series like Fragments of Our Love Story and Behind Closed Doors, she redefines the representation of women in art, embracing a deeply personal yet universal vision grounded in feminism, emotional memory, and art historical reference.
