Who is Frank Stella? Born in Massachusetts in 1936, Stella spent the majority of his career in New York City. He debuted on the art scene in 1960 with his first solo art exhibition, though he had previously taken part in an exhibition at the NYC Museum of Modern Art.
His work was controversial in his rejection of expressive painting and the lyricism of movement. Inspired by abstract expressionism and artists like Pollock and Kline, he created unique compositions which focused on contrast of shape and color. Using geometric framework work he experimented with mediums, eventually venturing into sculpture from the 1980s onwards.
Frank Stella has been monumental for the art scene. He contributed massively to the minimalist art movement, and countless artists continue to be inspired by his artworks today. If you're a fan of Frank Stella, discover our curated selection of artworks by artists inspired by Stella himself.
