James Marie is an American contemporary artist born in 1981 in the United States.
Self-taught, she was the subject of some exhibitions in the United States and in England, where her artworks appears in private collections.
The artist is inspired by subjects of feminine nudes emotionally charged, and by melancholic landscapes, evokes through his representational and abstracted works the fragility, the fleetingness and the delicacy of the Being, or the short-lived and escaped nature of a moment.
The ghostly figures which she draws resuscitate the past of the dust and make relive formerly in the present. " I am fascinated by the ephemeral nature of the memory, and the way time distorts and decays the contents of the mind. The way everything becomes fragmented. The way identity can become so deeply rooted in transient things like appearance or age.The influence of nonverbal language, and how each moment and gesture is original and unique and fleeting. It's the interplay of these main ideas that functions as the foundation of my creative process" the artist says.
Realized exclusively in charcoal, James Marie's drawings use the nudity to capture the attention of the spectator, but reveal their depth and all the emotional sense after a time of observation.
The representation of the abstract landscapes, which the American artist creates, highlights her deep nature,her need for solitude and calm. As the artist says : " The desire for simplicity, delicacy, strength and light were major factors in my decision to work in charcoal, and also in the use of the female form in many of my drawings. My aim is to use nudity, representing a wide variety of things, as a key note which initially captures your attention, but something that fades into the background as the middle and base notes, the cerebral and emotional aspects of the figure, become apparent. The figures, fragile echoes of a moment that once was, are drawn from dust. With the landscapes, I’m mapping the emotional and physical geography of home. From the forest to the rivers, I seek solitude as someone who is, by nature, somewhat reclusive and shy. Those are my places. Art is my therapy."
