Description
This drawing features a bovine head with an intense gaze. The line is precise. Pencil and pastel intertwine to create dense textures. The background is composed of tight horizontal lines. This graphic pattern accentuates the depth of the composition.
The animal wears a red and white keffiyeh. This accessory anchors the figure in a specific historical and political context. The pale blue of the coat contrasts with the warmth of the fabric. The posture suggests attentive vigilance. The influence of animation is felt in the stylization of the forms and the expressiveness of the face.
The artist uses a figurative approach here to address sociopolitical themes. The portrait becomes a symbol. Each hatching brings relief to the beast's anatomy. This work achieves a fusion between animal art and social commentary. The entire work is executed with great technical mastery on paper. The work dates from 2021.
Presentation
Amer Shomali is a Palestinian multidisciplinary artist whose work explores Palestinian history, politics, popular culture, and the symbols associated with the Palestinian national struggle. Working across painting, film, digital media, installation, comics, and animation, he combines traditional and contemporary forms to examine how political events and historical figures become part of collective memory. His work often uses humour, popular imagery, and visual storytelling to make complex histories accessible to a wider audience.
Born in Kuwait in 1981 to a family from Beit Sahour, Palestine, Shomali studied Architecture at Birzeit University, graduating in 2003, before completing a Master's degree in Animation at Arts University Bournemouth in the United Kingdom. His childhood was shaped by displacement during the Gulf War, when his family moved from Kuwait to the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus. Shomali is also the co-director of the award-winning animated documentary The Wanted 18 and has worked extensively in animation, illustration, and digital media. He currently lives and works in Ramallah.
