Description

The artwork "Japoneses IX" enters the resolution phase of "Act III. The Code of the Ballpoint Drawings (The Secret Messages)", synthesizing two of the primary plastic and thematic devices of the project: the fiduciary banknote support as a material register of financial transaction, and the poetics of intimacy embodied by the feline and butterfly motifs. Within the narrative of the exhibition, this drawing formalizes the shift away from trauma toward serene contemplation, where the geisha reclaims full possession of her own presence.

Material Ground: The Indonesian Banknote and Historical Memory

Echoing (US dollar) and (Dutch guilder), the artist employs an authentic vintage banknote as the surface for graphic intervention: a 10 sen bill from Indonesia (), featuring an engraved portrait of an armed female volunteer or guerrilla fighter () in its upper-right corner:

Geopolitical and Postcolonial Resonance: The Indonesian banknote introduces a Southeast Asian historical dimension, weaving implicit parallels between anti-colonial resistance struggles, commercial networks, and the historical circulation and trafficking of female bodies across Asia.

Recontextualized Fiscal Value: The bank typography ("10 SEPULUH SEN") and security guilloché patterns are partially overlaid by the drawing and calligraphy, subordinating the authority of money to the sovereignty of the intimate narrative inscribed above it.

Compositional Analysis and Characters

Portrait of the Geisha (A Self-Possessed Gaze): On the left appears a young woman with an oval face, luminous skin, softly blushed cheeks, and carmine lips. Her traditional hairstyle is adorned with delicate pink blossoms, emerald-green beads, and a large ochre-and-teal butterfly perched like a living ornament. Her clear green eyes look directly at the spectator with composure: there is no longer the open panic of or , but rather a dignified, self-contained calm facing her own destiny.

The Tabby Cat (Guardian of Silence): To the right, a gray tabby cat with vibrant emerald eyes rests in a seated posture, gazing attentively forward. This reintroduces the recurring feline motif seen in and , serving as a quiet witness, an emblem of emotional sanctuary, and a protector of unspoken confidences.

The Cerulean Contour Line: Both principal subjects (the woman and the cat) are outlined with a firm cobalt and cyan contour—a signature visual device of the series that cuts them away from the printed currency, affirming their agency against the fiscal ground.

Vermilion Calligraphy: Whispers of the Night and Illusion

The central area is dominated by an assertive Japanese calligraphy rendered in bright vermilion-orange ink, flowing in vertical columns across the face of the banknote:

Inscribed Text:

Poetic Function: The text explores the balance between naked reality () and aesthetic persona (), capturing an encounter where both touch without destructive predation, momentarily suspending sorrow.

Placement in the Exhibition Narrative

Restored Peace and Dissolution of the Enigma: reinforces the arc of healing established in the wake of the works depicting explicit violence. Beauty ceases to function as a claustrophobic trap cast in resin, transforming into a mental sanctuary defined by memory and autonomy.

The Geisha Beyond Fear: The visual juxtaposition of the banknote's female fighter, the vigilant cat, and the butterfly-crowned geisha delivers the conceptual conclusion of the project: the progression from the enforced silence of the dark alleys toward a liberated, self-determined lyric voice.
