Description
The black line imposes itself rigorously on the white paper. The contrast is total. The ink defines sharp and crisp outlines.
A fragmented architecture dominates the upper part. Blocks pile up like urban debris. This structure seems to collapse or rise in an organized chaos.
At the bottom, bodies intertwine in a posture of retreat. A character bends over, their face hidden in their hands. Another silhouette envelops them, seeking to offer precarious shelter.
The drawing explores the tension between the hardness of stones and the fragility of beings. The void and the full dialoguing to translate a feeling of uncertainty.
This figurative composition is part of a political and historical reflection. It illustrates the weight of displacement and human vulnerability in the face of conflict.
The work, created in 2026, uses the ink drawing technique to accentuate the dramatic dimension of the scene. The gaze circulates between the broken city and the intimacy of a gesture of support. Each line emphasizes a reality marked by survival and resistance.
Presentation
Maisara Baroud is a Palestinian artist whose practice explores war, displacement, confinement, and the human experience of living through conflict. Working primarily through painting and drawing, he often depicts figures and environments marked by tension, vulnerability, and uncertainty. His use of black and white creates strong contrasts of light and shadow, allowing gesture, expression, and atmosphere to become central elements of his work.
Born in Gaza in 1976, Baroud received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Al-Najah National University in Nablus in 1998 and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts in Zamalek, Cairo, in 2011. He has also worked as an educator at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza, alongside his artistic practice. His experience of living and working in Gaza has informed his engagement with themes of war, displacement, and survival, which appear throughout his work. Baroud has exhibited widely in Palestine and internationally and continues to develop his artistic practice until today from his art studio in Marseille, France.
